Measuring What AI Search Actually Rewards
In 2026, a brand can hold the top organic position for its category and still be invisible where the decision is actually made.
Generative engines such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google’s AI Overviews now answer the query directly, often without surfacing a single link. Seer Interactive’s longitudinal study of 2,43 billion organic impressions found that click through rate on queries with an AI Overview collapsed from 1,76% to 0,61% between June 2024 and September 2025, a drop of 65% (Seer Interactive, 2026). Ahrefs, analysing 300.000 keywords, measured a 58% click through rate decline for the top ranking page once an AI Overview appears (Ahrefs, 2026).
For CMOs, the strategic question is no longer “where do we rank.” It is “are we part of the answer.” That question requires a new metric: prompt visibility.
1. From keyword rank to prompt visibility
Traditional SEO measures success by position: where a page lands for a given keyword across millions of near identical searches. Generative engines do not return a ranked list. They synthesise a single answer from whichever sources they judge most relevant, authoritative and extractable for that specific prompt.
Prompt visibility is the percentage of a defined prompt set, the real questions a brand’s buyers ask an AI engine, in which that brand is named, cited or recommended. It replaces “position 1 to 10” with a binary, cumulative measure: present or absent, for each question that matters to the business.
2. Why keyword based share of voice no longer translates
Only 17% of AI Overview citations now come from a page ranking in the organic top 10, down from 76% in mid 2024, according to BrightEdge’s year long tracking study (BrightEdge, 2026). A brand’s search share of voice and its AI share of voice are increasingly two different numbers, and the second one is now driving category discovery.
3. What a prompt visibility score is built from
A defensible prompt visibility score rests on three inputs.
- A real prompt library. Not ten branded searches, but the range of buyer intent: category questions, comparison questions, use case questions, and branded questions, phrased the way a buyer would actually ask an AI assistant.
- Engine coverage. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google AI Overviews each retrieve and weight sources differently, so a single engine reading understates real exposure.
- A consistent scoring method, run on a fixed cadence, since AI answers drift with every model update.
4. The pattern most audits uncover: strong on trust, weak on usage
Across the GEO audits Indaru runs, one pattern recurs with striking consistency. Brands tend to score well on value and trust prompts (is this brand good, is this brand reputable, is this brand worth the price) while showing a marked visibility gap on practical and usage prompts (how do I use this, how do I set this up, what is the best way to do X with this). The first category builds preference. The second is where the buying decision is actually finalised, and it is where most brands are losing the citation to a competitor or a third party publisher.
5. From score to strategy
A prompt visibility score is only useful when it is segmented, by prompt type, by market, and by engine, because the fix for a trust gap (earned media, third party validation) is entirely different from the fix for a usage gap (structured, extractable how to content). Treating prompt visibility as a single aggregate number hides exactly the diagnosis a marketing team needs to act on.
Final Consideration: Visibility Is Now a Governance Question
Prompt visibility is not a vanity metric. It is the leading indicator of whether a brand’s media and content investment still reaches the buyer before a competitor’s does. As generative engines absorb a growing share of category research, a brand that cannot measure its prompt visibility cannot manage it, and cannot defend its content and media budget in the boardroom with evidence rather than assumption.
Indaru’s GEO Audit measures prompt visibility across the buyer journey, benchmarks it against named competitors, and identifies exactly where the trust to usage gap is costing a brand citations.
